How much does a media wall cost?

It depends on the width of the wall, how much cabinetry and shelving it includes, the finish and whether there is a fire. A simple fitted TV unit costs less than a full wall of cupboards, shelving and lighting. We give you a detailed quotation once the design is settled, so you can see what is included, including fitting, electrical work and decorating.

Can you build a media wall with an electric fire?

Yes. We build the opening to the fire manufacturer's dimensions and clearances, allow for the heat it gives off, and position the screen so it is comfortable to watch. We can suggest fires that suit the design or build around one you have already chosen.

Can a media wall go on an existing chimney breast?

Yes, and it is often the best place for one. The breast carries the screen and the fire, and the alcoves either side become cupboards and shelves. We look at the chimney and any existing fireplace at the survey before we design.

Will a media wall work in a smaller living room?

It can, if the depth and proportions suit the room. Shallow cabinetry and shelving give you storage without eating into the floor, and we plan around the viewing distance, the seating and the doors so the room still works.

Where do the cables go?

Inside the wall. We plan the sockets, aerial, network and speaker cables before anything is built, with access where you will need to reach the equipment later and ventilation for anything that runs warm.

Are media walls going out of fashion?

Large panelled feature walls will come and go, but fitted joinery around a fireplace and its alcoves has been part of British living rooms for a long time. We design media walls to suit the house, with proportions and finishes that will still look right when you change the television.

How long does it take to fit a media wall?

The cabinetry is made in our workshop first, so the time spent in your home is short. How long depends on the size of the wall and any electrical or plastering work, and we agree the timings with you once the design is settled.

Made for the room

A media wall built around the room, not the TV.

A media wall is a single run of fitted joinery that frames the television and takes everything around it out of sight: the set-top box, the speakers, the cables, the games and the things a living room gathers. Done well, it looks like part of the house. We measure the room ourselves, design the wall around the chimney breast, the windows and where you sit, and build it to the millimetre in our workshop.

An inset electric fire below the screen gives a living room its focal point back. We build the opening to the fire's specification, allow for the heat it gives off and the ventilation it needs, and set the screen at a height you can comfortably watch from the sofa.

Storage and shelving

Cupboards below, shelves either side.

Most media walls earn their keep in the storage. Low cupboards take the consoles and the clutter, open shelves either side hold books and the things you want on show, and a slatted or panelled backing gives the wall texture without competing with the screen.

Chimney breasts and alcoves

Using the chimney breast and the alcoves.

Older houses across Manchester and Cheshire often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. We build the media wall around it, so the screen sits on the breast and the alcoves become fitted cupboards and shelving. In newer homes without a chimney, we create the depth with a framed wall, which also hides the cables.

Bookcases and library walls

Fitted bookcases and library walls.

The same joinery extends to a full wall of books. Floor-to-ceiling bookcases, a library ladder on a rail, or shelving built around a doorway turn a snug, a reading room or a landing into somewhere you want to sit.
